AC Cleaning in Israel — FAQ for English Speakers | Sayeret HaMazganim

Questions & answers

The things nobody explains when you move into an Israeli apartment.

How much does air conditioner cleaning cost in Israel?

A split (wall) unit starts at ₪350; two units ₪499, three units ₪749. A mini-central system starts at ₪450, and air duct cleaning at ₪249 per duct. There is no call-out fee. You get the exact figure in writing before we come, and you pay after the work is done. Full breakdown on our pricing page.

Who pays for AC cleaning — the tenant or the landlord?

In most Israeli leases, routine cleaning and filter maintenance are the tenant's responsibility, while repairing or replacing the unit is the landlord's. Read the maintenance clause in your contract — it's usually explicit. If the unit was clearly neglected before you moved in, it's entirely reasonable to ask the landlord to cover the first clean, and in our experience a lot of them agree, because a neglected unit is what kills their compressor.

What's the difference between a split unit and a mini-central?

A split (עילי) is the white box mounted on a wall, one per room. A mini-central (מיני מרכזי) is a single machine hidden above a lowered ceiling, feeding flat vents in several rooms through ducts. If you see ceiling vents and no wall unit, you have a mini-central. It costs more to clean because it takes two to three times as long and needs duct equipment.

How often should I clean it in Israel?

Once a year, before summer (April–May) for most homes. Every six months if you live on the coast, have small children, allergies or pets, or run the AC through the winter as well. Israeli humidity is significantly harder on air conditioners than the climates most English speakers move here from — an annual service that would be optional elsewhere is close to mandatory here.

Why does my air conditioner smell bad?

Mold and bacteria growing on the cooling coil, in the drain pan, or inside the ducts. The coil is wet all summer, in the dark, coated in dust — ideal growing conditions. The smell won't fade on its own and returns worse each season. One deep clean with disinfection resolves it in most cases. More on mold removal →

Will cleaning lower my electricity bill?

Yes, measurably. A coil clogged with dust and biofilm can't transfer heat properly, so the unit runs 20–30% longer to reach the same temperature. Most customers notice the difference on the next Chevrat Hashmal bill. For a household running AC through an Israeli summer, the clean frequently pays for itself within one season.

Do I need to be at home during the work?

No. Many customers leave a key with a neighbour, the va'ad bayit, or in a lockbox. A split unit takes 30–45 minutes, two units usually under an hour and a quarter, a mini-central two to three hours. We send before and after photos either way, so you can see what was done.

Is the cleaning safe for children and pets?

Yes. We use EPA-approved antimicrobial products and the room is safe to use as soon as the surfaces are dry — typically within the hour. If you have a baby in the house, tell us when you book and we'll plan the timing around nap and feed schedules.

Do you give a tax invoice?

Yes, a full חשבונית מס for every job, and we'll issue it in English if you need it for an employer reimbursement or a relocation package. Cash, Bit, bank transfer and card are all accepted.

How quickly can you come?

Normally within 24–48 hours. Peak season — May and June — is the exception, and can run to a week, which is exactly why we tell everyone to book their annual clean in March or April rather than the first hot week.

Do you repair air conditioners too?

We are a cleaning specialist, not a repair company — that focus is the whole point. That said, a great many faults people assume are breakdowns (poor cooling, water dripping, a unit that runs constantly) turn out to be dirt, and the clean resolves them. If we open your unit and find a genuine mechanical or gas fault, we'll tell you plainly and point you to someone rather than charging you for a clean that won't help.

Which areas do you cover?

Central Israel: Tel Aviv, Herzliya, Ra'anana, Kfar Saba, Netanya, Ramat Hasharon, Hod Hasharon, Ramat Gan, Givatayim, Petah Tikva, Modi'in, Rishon LeZion, Holon, Bat Yam, Rehovot, Rosh HaAyin, Shoham and more. See all areas → If your city isn't listed, ask anyway — we usually get there.

Do you actually speak English, or is this just a translated page?

Actually. Booking, quoting, the technician on site, the invoice and anything afterwards all happen in English. You will not need to find a Hebrew-speaking friend to translate a quote, and you won't be told a price at the door that differs from the one you agreed.
