AC Mold & Smell Removal in Israel | English Service

Your AC smells. Here's why, and what fixes it.

Mold removal at the source — not a spray that masks it for a week.

Why does my air conditioner smell bad, and how do I get rid of it permanently?

A musty or sour smell from an air conditioner is caused by mold and bacteria growing on the cooling coil, in the drain pan and on the blower wheel. The coil stays wet through the cooling season, sits in the dark, and is coated in the dust the fan draws in — ideal growing conditions, and especially so in Israel's humidity. The smell will not fade on its own and returns stronger each season. It is removed permanently by a deep clean that physically pressure-washes the coil and blower wheel and clears the drain line, followed by an EPA-approved disinfectant. Filter rinses, aerosol sprays and running the unit on fan mode do not reach the source and will not fix it.

What that smell actually is

An air conditioner cools by condensing moisture out of the air onto a cold metal coil. In an Israeli summer, that coil is wet for most of the day, sitting in the dark, at room temperature, coated in the fine dust the fan has pulled in. That is, in practical terms, a laboratory culture dish.

Mold and bacteria colonise the coil, the drain pan below it, and the blower wheel behind it. When you switch the unit on, the first thing it does is blow air across that growth and into the room. The smell you notice in the first thirty seconds — sour, musty, a bit like a wet towel left in a bag — is the colony being aerosolised.

It does not fade with time. Turning the unit off for the winter doesn't kill it; it just goes dormant and comes back stronger. And it is the reason a lot of people find they are congested every morning in summer and blame it on allergies or the dust.

Why the things you've tried didn't work

✗

Rinsing the filters. The filter is a dust screen at the front. The growth is on the coil behind it. Washing the filter changes nothing about the smell.

✗

Spray cans from the hardware store. They deodorise the surface for a few days. They don't reach the blower wheel or the drain pan, and the source is untouched.

✗

Running it on fan mode. Drying the coil slows growth slightly. It doesn't remove what's already established.

✗

A ten-minute "cleaning" call-out. If the technician didn't remove the cover and wash the coil under pressure, he didn't clean it.

What we do instead

1

Find the source

Coil, drain pan, blower wheel or ductwork — they smell different and need different treatment. We check all of them.

2

Physically remove it

Pressure washing strips the growth off the metal. Chemical alone doesn't do this; the biofilm has to come off.

3

Clear the drain

A blocked drain leaves standing water in the pan, which re-seeds the whole unit within weeks. This is the step most people skip.

4

Disinfect

EPA-approved antimicrobial through the coil and ducts. Safe around children and pets once dry.

In the large majority of cases the smell is gone the same day and doesn't return that season. Where a system has been left for many years, it occasionally needs a second pass — we'll tell you honestly if we think that's likely before you book.

Is it dangerous?

For a healthy adult, mostly it's unpleasant. For people with asthma, allergies, a compromised immune system, or for small babies, it is worth taking seriously — continuous exposure to airborne mold spores in a bedroom is not a good idea for anyone. If there's a baby in the house, we'd clean before the summer rather than during it.
