Short answer
A split air conditioner (mazgan ili, מזגן עילי) is the white box mounted high on a wall, one per room, with a compressor outside. A mini-central (mini merkazi, מיני מרכזי) is a single concealed unit above a lowered ceiling that feeds flat vents in several rooms through ducts. The quick test: if you see vents in your ceiling and no box on any wall, you have a mini-central. Splits are cheaper to clean (from ₪350 per unit, 30–45 minutes); mini-centrals cost more (from ₪450 plus ₪249 per duct, two to three hours) and are neglected far more often, because there is nothing visible to remind you they exist.

| Mini-central (מיני מרכזי) | Concealed unit above a dropped ceiling, ducts to ceiling vents |
| Quick identification | Ceiling vents and no wall box = mini-central |
| Typical in | Splits: older buildings and retrofits · Mini-central: most builds since ~2005 |

| Cleaning cost — mini-central | from ₪450 + ₪249 per duct |
| Cleaning duration | Split: 30–45 min per unit · Mini-central: 2–3 hours |
| Can you see the dirty part? | Split: yes, behind the flap · Mini-central: no, which is the problem |
| Most common failure | Split: smell and weak cooling · Mini-central: mold in ducts, uneven cooling, ceiling leaks |
| Also exists in Israel | Cassette units (ceiling-mounted square, common in offices) and VRF systems |

A split unit gives you feedback. You can see the filters going grey, you can see dark speckling on the vanes, and the smell comes from an identifiable object on the wall. Even people who never service it know, roughly, that it exists and that it is dirty.
A mini-central gives you none of that. The machine is behind plasterboard. The ducts are soft, ribbed, dark and permanently damp through an Israeli summer, which is close to a purpose-built environment for mold. And because a mini-central serves several rooms, whatever grows in there is distributed to all of them — including bedrooms and children's rooms — rather than to one.
In practice, we routinely open mini-central systems in ten- and fifteen-year-old apartments that have never been cleaned once. The owners are not negligent; nothing ever prompted them. If your apartment was built after roughly 2005 and you have never had a technician in the ceiling, assume yours is in that category.
Two others you'll meet in Israel. A cassette is a square unit set flush into a ceiling, blowing from all four sides — common in offices, clinics and some larger apartments. VRF is a commercial arrangement where one large outdoor unit drives many indoor units independently, standard in office buildings and new towers. Both need the same deep cleaning; both are priced per indoor unit. We clean all four types →
